I've also got some footage from Jurrasic Park and some other films. Here's the funny thing: For obvious reasons, shots where the camera moves but the people don't work best. As much as the camera moved in Jurrasic Park, I could only get a couple of usable 3D frames. The reason is that, every time the camera started to move, the people moved in synch. When the camera stopped, the people stopped as well. On Lord of the Rings, however, there were dozens of shots where absolutely NOTHING was going on at all except camera movement.

I think this is an interesting comparison of directing style between Steven Spielberg and Pete Jackson. They're both fine directors but the number of "gratuitous" dolly shots in Lord of the Rings compared to Jurrasic Park was pretty telling, in my opinion. I've never been a fan of moving the camera just for heck of it or to add "production value" to an otherwise boring scene. I'm not saying that Lord of the Rings was boring. Well, maybe a bit. It certainly was entertaining but didn't seem to have a real "drive" that Spielberg's films usually have. But then again, A.I. was a snoozer. Hmmmm. Wonder how many gratuitous dolly shots there were in A.I.?

Anyway, I'll be going through some other films as soon as I can. Not much time these days with my WorkPrinter orders but, occasionally, I have to find time to play.

    Hi all!

Nothing to do with super 8 but...

I dabble in 3D photography on occasion. I recently started an ongoing project where I take successive frames from dolly shots in movies and use them to create 3D stereoscopic images. I just posted my first efforts using footage from Lord of the Rings. It's comin' atcha in 3D here:

Some of the computer generated imagery is fun to view in 3D (like a ViewMaster, remember those?). Anyway, enjoy...

Abraham Zapruder's famous Standard 8 film of President Kennedy getting shot also lends itself to this 3D viewing technique. Although the Lincoln was moving and Zapruder was panning the frames are different enough (at 16 fps) to give a really good 3D view of that famous dallas highway.
